Method — Latency Buffer

Definition, scope boundary, and structural model.

Definition

Latency Buffer refers to buffering used to retain data for an interval in order to accommodate latency, delay variation, or another defined timing constraint, with the buffering interval itself contributing to system latency.

Model Classification

Temporal constraint model.

The model describes the relationship between temporal conditions, temporary retention, and latency contribution without defining a universal process sequence or implementation mechanism.

Scope Boundary

Included

Buffering in relation to latency or timing constraints
Temporary retention of data
Buffering intervals and buffer-induced delay
Delay variation where buffering is used to accommodate it
Timing bounds that determine buffering requirements
Buffer requirements resulting from temporal variation
Fixed or adaptive buffering insofar as it concerns the temporal relationship

Excluded

Buffers without a relevant latency or timing relation
Caches as such
Queues as such
Storage capacity considered independently of timing
Latency measurement without a buffering relation
General low-latency architecture
Jitter as a standalone phenomenon
Network congestion as such
Bufferbloat as the general definition of Latency Buffer
Claims that buffering necessarily reduces latency

Temporal Constraint Structure

Timing Condition

The latency, delay variation, arrival-time uncertainty, or other bounded timing condition that buffering is intended to accommodate.

Buffering Interval

The period for which data is temporarily retained relative to the applicable timing condition.

Latency Contribution

The delay introduced or affected by retaining data within the buffering structure.

Structural Relation

Buffering accommodates a timing condition by retaining data for an interval, while that retention contributes to the latency experienced within the relevant system.

This relation does not define a universal temporal sequence, causal chain, or implementation procedure.

Transferability

The temporal constraint structure is transferable across systems in which data is temporarily retained in relation to a latency or timing requirement. The relevant timing condition, buffering mechanism, retention interval, capacity, and acceptable latency remain system-dependent.
