About — Latency Buffer

Context and positioning.

Context

Buffering is used in systems where data must be retained temporarily relative to a latency, delay variation, arrival-time uncertainty, or other timing condition.

The relevant relationship is temporal: buffering can accommodate a timing condition, while the retention interval itself contributes to system latency.

Differentiation

Latency Buffer is not equivalent to a jitter buffer, queue, cache, or generic storage mechanism. Those mechanisms fall within the reference only where a relevant latency or timing relationship is established.

It also differs from general low-latency architecture, latency measurement, network congestion, and bufferbloat by focusing specifically on temporary retention in relation to timing constraints.

System Role

The reference isolates the structural relationship between a timing condition, a buffering interval, and the latency contribution associated with retention.

It does not prescribe a universal buffer implementation or imply that buffering necessarily reduces latency.
